What the Gut?
Your gut is linked to nearly every facet of your health, from your immune system to your mood. There are about 38 trillion microorganisms, mostly bacteria, living in and on your body and the genes found in these are what make up the microbiome we have living within our gut.
Red Flags
A lot of the symptoms of issues with your gut are things that you might dismiss. Things like bloating, gas, diarrhoea, constipation, discomfort and indigestion. Other symptoms could also be;
Chronic Bad Breath
Skin Issues
Mood Changes
Fatigue
Weight Gain
Poor Sleep
Poor Concentration
Arthritis
Headaches
Joint Pains
The Cookie Monster
As well as these symptoms, a craving for sugar is another tell tale sign that the bad bacteria in your gut are screaming for a feed. If you give in to the biscuit tin on a regular basis, you feed the bad bacteria, and the cycle continues. The next time you find yourself craving refined sugar, remember that it is the 'bad' bacteria in your gut that is craving it.
Road to Recovery
The positive news is that you can turn your microbiome around in just a couple of days by choosing gut-friendly foods. Pre+probiotic foods like sweet potatoes and COYO yoghurt nourish your microbiome while things like artificial sweeteners and alcohol are best avoided.
