Turmeric

COYO sits down with Turmeric to find out what gives this golden spice it’s magical healing qualities, it’s bountiful glow and why the world is going Curcumin crazy !

Turmeric, we know your somewhat new to the superfood team, but that’s not really true is it? Can you tell us how you started out?

No it’s not entirely true, I’ve been around for a long time. I began my life of healing in Asia, primarily India, where i have been used for thousands of years in everything from daily meals, to traditional craft but most famously i have been rooted in the ancient practice of Ayurvedic medicine where i have beed used to cure a whole host of ailments and diseases.

Can you tell us why you (Turmeric) are so highly prized medicinal practices like Ayurveda?

That would be because few medicinal plants posses the same wide spectrum of healing properties that I do. I contain very important bioactive compounds with powerful medicinal qualities, these compounds are called Curcuminoids, the most famous of which is called Curcumin.

What is Curcumin exactly?

Curcumin is the active component within all Turmeric that gives rise to all the wonderful health benefits that come from consuming this super spice and is where all the benefits are contained.

Could you tell us about the key benefits of consuming Turmeric?

Certainly, I can give you my top 7 health benefits of Turmeric.

1 It’s Anti- Inflammatory power:  It has been found that Inflammation plays a role in nearly all Western disease, the Curcumin in Turmeric helps to fight inflammation at a cellular level by blocking molecules that activate inflammation.

2 An antioxidant booster: Curcumin both boosts’s our bodies own natural antioxidant enzymes and is in itself a strong source of free radical fighting antioxidants.

3 Brain health and function: Curcumin stimulates the growth of brain Neurons and helps fight the effects of degenerative brain disease.

4 Lowering the risk of heart disease: It does this by being able to reduce inflammation, oxidation and improving the function of the lining in our blood vessels.

5 Linked with Cancer Prevention:  Curcumin has been shown to create molecular level changes that could help prevent cancerous growth.

6 Treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s:  Curcumin helps to clear brain clogging proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

7 An Arthritis treatment: With potent anti inflammatory qualities, Curcumin is said to be a very affective at treating joint inflation associated with Arthritis.

So we have to ask, how did you and COYO meet?

They we’re creating a collective of raw ingredients for the their New Coconut Mezze Dip and one of the flavours was Fermented Kim Chi. Kim Chi and I are long time friends and we often go together. I went through a rigorous screening process and auditioned along side many other spices but in the end it was subtle earthy slightly spicy flavour, my medicinal value and my quality that got me through to be part of the final team of raw ingredients.

We did actually hear through the grape vine that you were working on a project together, can you elaborate a little more on that for us?

Those grapes, you can’t tell them anything, ha ha. Yes it’s true. We’re very excited to have launched the new product together and have collaborated with a wonderful team of ingredients to create the world’s first Coconut Mezze Dip with a coconut yoghurt base. It combines their delicious coconut yoghurt as a base with fermented vegetables. I’m in the Fermented Kim Chi flavour. It’s really delicious, a bit addictive and a super easy way to enjoy all the health benefits of active cultures, fermented vegetables and functional foods like me!

You have such a luscious glow about you, have you been on vacation?
